island4ever
Running low on ports, can I connect my switch to the Island using the switches SFP+ port?
Lew
Sure, but it depends on the switch. Many switches will support a gigabit SFP installed in an SFP+ slot, in which case you just get a copper gigabit SFP. But you can also get a multi-speed copper SFP+ that supports all available speeds (100M, 1G, 2.5G, 5G, and 10G) and that should also work fine. You might check your switch and see what it supports, but you should have options.
island4ever
Thanks. Is there any reduction is speed or anything vs a regular network port?
Lew
No, not at all. Well, come to think of it, copper transceivers (whether built in or pluggable) have slightly higher latency than fiber or direct-attach, but it's a couple of microseconds, i.e., not something you'd notice or be able to measure easily.
